Creative way to promote safe sex and distribute condoms

Added by Discreet Condoms NZ. February 06, 2006
Broome trees may push safe sex message

A western Australian town is considering introducing 'tree' condoms at local parks and hang out for youths.

The idea is to hang pvc containers containing free condoms to the surrounding trees so condoms are available at these locations.

The high rate of STIs in the area has caused this creative thinking for promoting safer sex.

Wait for the complaints! Broome Shire president Graeme Campbell expects a lot of those, but said
When you look at the fact that the population of the Kimberley comprises only 2 per cent of the population and that 48 per cent of the state's STIs occur in the Kimberley ... that's appalling.

Alcohol banned but sex okay at Games village

Sex is ok but you will have to go elsewhere for a drink of alcohol if you are in the commonwealth games village in Melbourne next month.

The residential part of the village has been zoned as an alcohol free, however sex is allowed. It is thought that it wont be an issue due to lack of time and privacy in a crowded village environment.

Radionz reported that;
Organisers are supplying the village with 60,000 taxpayer funded condoms - one for each resident every day for 10 days.

Colombian town threatens 'condom fines'

A western Colombian town has come up with a novel way to try and prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted disease.

The new law would see men fined for not carrying condoms. The Herald covered the story and printed this:
Those who fail to show a condom would have to pay a small fine or take a three-hour course in Aids prevention in Tulua, where 14 people died of sexually transmitted diseases last year.
This type of action has run into opposition in the form of the Catholic Church. They compared this to selling guns in the street.

Can't you just see a law like this taking off in New Zealand!

Let's Talk About Sex

Let's Talk About Sex

Drum roll please for November 8th. That is when the results for this years Durex Sex Survey will be out.

The Durex Global Sex Survey is understood to be the largest study of sexual behaviour with over 300,000 people taking part from 41 countries.

Scoop.co.nz caught the reaction from the Manager of Durex New Zealand.
Durex NZ Manager, Victoria Potter says with each Durex sex survey New Zealanders continue to prove that they're an active bunch -- but quantity of sex does not necessarily mean quality.

"We're looking forward to revealing this year's results. The 2004 sex survey showed that New Zealanders are very keen lovers beating the Australians in the frequency of sex stakes -- but when it comes to quality of sex, New Zealanders didn't fare too well with a third admitting they faked orgasms," says Ms Potter.

More sex for better health

More sex for better health

Sex-ercise, the new way to live a healthy life and reduce the risk of bad health.

Sexual intimacy, as well as making you feel good mentally, is now thought to improve your physical health also.

An article on health in the India Times:
sex actually has benefits for our physical,as well as our psychological, well being. Although not in the same class as your one hour aerobic schedule, sex does give you a workout, depending upon how vigorous it is. The reason is quite simple to find:sex, and particularly the orgasm, involves the contraction of muscles in the arms, legs and abdomen. Also, your heart and breathing rates rise when you are sexually aroused just as they do when you exert yourself on the playing field or at the gym

In order to promote safe sex and the use of condoms in India, they are mixing the message with their national game in order to get around a rather taboo subject.

Smh.com reports that in a fairly conservative country,
open talk about condoms is still taboo in rural areas and small towns. So in an advertisement by the National AIDS Control Organisation placed in a national daily this week, three wooden wickets set against a blue sky are covered by condoms with a caption reading: "Save your wicket from unwanted googlies of life."

Where Are the Femidoms?

rubber.co.nz offers them for sale on the website. Femidoms are female condoms that the woman puts in place before having sex.

A Health Director in Africa is questioning the lack of promotion and availability of female condoms in health centres in the area.

Reported in allafrica.com, Elizabeth Lottering said
though male condoms were available at all health and distribution outlets, this was not the case with femidoms.

Though she could not say how many thousands of condoms are distributed on a yearly basis in the Erongo Region, to date the Ministry has not yet started to manufacture female condoms.
I think this lack of recognition is a worldwide issue. May be in the next few years demand for the Femidom will increase, they will be a permanent fixture in health centres and retail shops.

The changing world of hotel mini-bars

A recent article from the Chicago Tribune on Mini-bars looks at how Mini-bars have evolved over the years. Here is what they have found some Mini-bars are now stocking;
Mini-bars have come a long way since the '70s. You can still find peanuts, chips and cookies as well as the usual beverages. But a few hotel minds who think outside the traditional box have added some untraditional items to the mix: condoms, gels, lubricants, massage oils and canned oxygen, to name a few.
Fancy that, go to a hotel with your family and have this line up in your mini-bar. Well, at least you dont have to go to the local store for these items now.

Let's Get Ready To Rumble! Sex Survey Begins...

The Durex Global Sex Survey is underway and results will be released in November.
Last year over 41 countries participated in the survey to see which ruled the bedroom.

As well as seeing who does it the most, the survey also reveals useful information on contraception use.

Scoop.co.nz looks at the start of this year's survey, and reviewed New Zealand's sex survey results from last year.
Kiwis' responses last year revealed unsafe sex had increased, with 57% admitting to having had unsafe sex (up 20% from 2003) -- giving New Zealand the third highest rate of unsafe sex in the world.

In 2004, respondents also reported on their favourite sexual experiences, and what and who turns them on. While only 30% of Kiwis said they orgasm every time, they were still getting in the sack more than most countries -- having sex on average 114 times per year, and beating the Aussies on 103 times.
Roll on November to see how we stack up to the rest of the world when it comes to sex.
